Why Jim Works Out For His Future Kids

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.

“I need to get on top of this now. We’re starting a family soon and I’d love to be in shape for that stage of my life and set a positive example for my future kids.

I know if I don’t do this now, it’s not going to happen. That’s why I asked for your help - it’s now or never.”

My client Jim had already:

  • Lost 15+ pounds

  • Gained so much strength he was maxing out his 75 lb adjustable dumbbells

  • Needed to get his tux re-tailored for his wedding because he lost so many inches around his weight

Many would have been satisfied with the amazing progress. Chill out, rest on their laurels, and call it a day.

Not Jim. Instead, he’s hungrier than ever (mostly figuratively).

Here’s why:

He understands that prioritizing his health is a long term investment that positively impacts himself and everyone he interacts with.

For Jim, fitness isn’t about not having a carb since 2004, getting a six pack, and lathering those boys up with Kheil’s every day in the shower.

He doesn’t give a hoot about his biceps busting through shmedium sleeves or squatting with weight the equivalent of a baby cow on his back. Unfortunately for all the baby cows out there, they’ll have to find someone else to squat them.

He might have cared more about the vanity and ego-drive aspects of fitness back in the day, but not any more. He has sights set on bigger and better goals.

His main focus is to use health and fitness as a vehicle to help him be a better person and get more out of life. 80-90% of my clients have the exact same focus.

Jim’s not a guy that just talks the talk. Here’s his long term plan to walk the walk and fulfill his promise to himself.

Jim’s long term plan to get and stay healthy for his family.

Jim has a sedentary, demanding job. He’ll exercise when he feels like it but, like most of his, 97% he’d rather be lounging on the couch trying to decide if House of Dragons is a worthy Game of Thrones prequel or a total flop.

If left to his own devices and instincts, Jim knows that his life is going to include a lot more pizza and relaxation and a lot less egg white omelettes and sweat (I’m talking about eating well and exercising, separately, not a sweaty egg white omelette).

He knows exactly what he needs to do and he’s done it - plan ahead and implement healthy, near-automatic habits in his life.

Here are the top 3 lifestyle changes he’s made to help him stay on track:

  1. He starts his day with a high protein meal and prioritizes protein throughout his day - This helps control his hunger, reduce cravings, and makes it easier for him to moderate his calories.

  2. He works out with weights at least twice/week and usually thrice/week - Okay, you caught me, I just wanted a reason to include “thrice” in this article. Through resistance training and focusing on progressive overload, Jim is able to gain strength to not only move better and have less joint pain, but also “boost his metabolism” and burn more calories at rest.

  3. He gets his steps in or performs at least 30 minutes of cardio most days - Even though he can’t see it in the mirror, Jim knows the importance of training his heart. Getting his cardio in helps him burn more calories each day and manage his bodyweight and, more importantly, reduce his risk of the number one killer in the world - heart disease.

Want to hop aboard the “get in shape now instead of waiting until it’s too late” train, with Jim?

Jim has worked his butt off over the past few years that I I’ve been working with him. I can’t take any of the credit for his tremendous results.

He came to me with three crucial things:

  1. A dream of finally getting in the best shape of his life

  2. A willingness to work and stay committed over the long haul

  3. Absolutely no idea of how to get there or hold himself accountable

Numbers one and two were integral to his success. And once we were able to work together to square away tricky number three, his progress skyrocketed and he hasn’t looked back.
