Is This A Waste Of Time?
It’s 11:30am on Sunday, and I don’t want to write this article.
Football starts in 28 minutes (11:32 now), and I try to have my work wrapped by kickoff. But I had a few new client sign-ups this week and things got busier than usual. Not really a problem, though. That’s the whole point of writing these.
Still, moments like this make me question it. Are these articles even worth it? Who’s reading them? Would my time be better spent elsewhere?
And then I think of Sasha in Asia.
She found me years ago by Googling: “Can I eat croissants and lose fat?” (Spoiler: yes.)
She read my article How To Lose Fat While Enjoying Pizza, Beer, and Croissant Cookies, followed my stuff quietly for a while, and signed up for coaching just last week.
What are the odds?
How This Applies To You
I know you’ve got your own stuff going on—laundry, practice drop-offs, figuring out dinner.
You’ve been reading for about 90 seconds and you’re probably thinking, “Cool story, John, but I’ve got life to handle. Gotta go.”
Hang on a sec, pal!
The way I’m dragging my feet with this article? That hesitation? That voice in my head saying, “Just skip this one day. It doesn’t matter”?
It’s the exact same feeling you get about your next workout or healthy meal.
And it’s why you stay stuck!
I could skip this article today. It’s #260. Nobody’s refreshing their browser hoping for another one. But here’s the thing: one of the biggest reasons I’ve grown this business 5x over the last five years?
I don’t really skip.
And once you become someone who follows through more often than not—even on the busy, messy, low-motivation days—your entire fitness journey shifts.
Skipping one day? No big deal.
Life happens. You get sick, work runs long, dinner gets derailed. Missing a workout or grabbing takeout isn’t the problem.
But skipping as a pattern? That’s where things fall apart.
One missed session becomes a week off. A few skipped meals turns into, “I haven’t tracked anything in a month.” You keep saying you’ll start fresh Monday - but Monday keeps moving! Soon you’re skipping more than you’re showing up. The results stall. Your belief wavers. You tell yourself the plan isn’t working.
But it’s not the plan. It’s the pattern!
And that pattern rewrites your identity. You go from doing the thing to being someone who used to. You’re not just off-track—you’ve quietly given up.
Cue the “Game Over” screen.
Not because you missed once—but because you let that one miss turn into the norm.
The good news? It works both ways. One rep, one walk, one decent meal — that’s how the comeback starts. Skip a day? No sweat.
Just don’t become someone who skips.
Anyway, the games just kicked off. And the article’s done.
Not my most brilliant work. Not the deepest or most polished. But it’s here. I showed up and got it done.
Maybe for you, that means taking a 30-minute walk instead of hitting the gym. Or making a decent meal instead of 4 slices of pizza. Still counts. Still checks the box.
And that’s what it’s all about. See you next time :)
Best,
John
P.S. We had an awesome time playing darts at the sports bar on Saturday night. Check out this incredible mural painted on the building outside! Stunning.
